The In Memoriam montage is one of those parts of the Academy Awards that we look forward to every year. This year, we heard the theme from Ghost and at first were confused and then it hit us: montage time! Patrick Swayze was one of the movie stars we lost this past year, but Oscar breezed through his quick clip at the start of the montage — hardly the tribute fitting the star of such films as Dirty Dancing and Point Break. It made us think, “Hey, we could do this better.” So here’s five ways we would have made this year’s Oscar Memorial Montage better:
1. No James Taylor. Although we love the soulful singer’s guitar melodies, an orchestral version of “Unchained Melody” would have brought the house — and the tears — down.
2. More Swayze. What’s a Patrick Swayze tribute without a little “No one puts Baby in the corner” ??
3. Where’s Farrah? Farrah Fawcett was noticeably missing from the memorial montage. Sure, she was better known as a television actress and model, but she did work on several movies, including The Cannonball Run and the Jonathan Taylor Thomas vehicle Man of the House.
4. Put it up front. By the time the Academy got around to the memorial montage, the show was already running long. At that point in the show, every little second counts, but we want to sit back and enjoy the montage, not feel like screaming “Wrap it up!” at the TV.
5. Let the viewers chip in. If there is one thing the Internet has taught us, it’s that there are some people at home in their basements who are better montage/mash-up creators than those guys that work for the Academy. If we were in charge, we’d let the people pick their favorite moments from dead stars’ movies, send in submissions and spread out the memorial love in short snippets throughout the show. In Steven Zeitchik’s Risky Biz Blog on The Hollywood Reporter, he talks about whether Fox Searchlight’s Oscar blitz over the past few years will come to an end.
The studio specializes in offbeat films like “Juno,” “The Darjeeling Limited,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “The Wrestler,” and it’s heartening to think that Fox Searchlight films have been nominated for at least five Oscars in each of the past three years, including a best picture nom for all of them.
I say heartening because I always appreciate when the less mainstream films – the quirkier, more character driven films — earn audience kudos. It means that we really do want thinking-person films that are rich in story and overall production, rather than the slam-it-out commercial movies that populate theaters in droves.
But will Fox Searchlight take that journey up to the awards podium this year? As Zeitchik suggests, the studio has a good shot at picking up awards for writing and acting for “(500) Days of Summer,” the offbeat romantic comedy about a woman (Zooey Deschanel) who doesn’t believe true love exists, and the guy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her. It’s just the sort of film people love (watch the trailer here).
More after the jump, including the “Amelia” trailer…
Another Fox Searchlight film garnering buzz is “Amelia,” the Mira Nair directed biopic about legendary pilot Amelia Earhart starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor. Sure, they’ve all had some stinker films, but they also have nine Golden Globe and Oscar noms between them.
It’ll be interesting to see how Fox Searchlight shakes out this year during awards season. Take a look at the “Amelia” trailer. It really does look like a gorgeous film.

Star broke the news that Oscar winner Sean Penn filed for separation from his wife Robin right after Natalie Portman and him were seen making out. Was this a one night thing? I don’t think so!
It is the middle of May and the two are still seeing each other. We hear that Portman stimulates him in ways no other persons has, mentally or professionally. Apparently there is a lot more here with Natalie than Penn has had with any other girl.
What does his wife (I guess now his ex-wife) have to say about this? She is furious that he is messing around with such a young star. Is she furious out of jealousy? Or furious about the age do you think? Probably a mixture of both. First she must be jealous but then the fact that he is with a younger women probably doesn’t help the situation. I would be mad too.
Star reported in their April issue that Natalie and Sean were at Sunset Tower Hotel and after dinner were seen constantly touching each other. An eye witness tells Star that they went to a set of elevators that only go to the spa or private rooms…they came back down 45 minutes later and that’s when they were caught making out.
Looks like things are getting hot and heavy for Sean Penn and Natalie Portman…

Director Martin Scorsese has been handed the reigns of a biopic about legendary singer Frank Sinatra. Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures will produce the film; the companies acquired both the life rights and music rights of the Chairman of the Board. “We have dreamt of making a movie about Frank Sinatra, and Marty Scorsese is undeniably the perfect vision keeper for this project,” Mandalay chairman Peter Guber said in a statement.
The Sinatra biopic is one of many high-profile music projects Oscar-winning director Scorsese has tackled in his illustrious career. Scorsese has previously helmed live music spectacles like the Band’s The Last Waltz and the Rolling Stones’ Shine A Light, as well as the Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home and a planned 2010 doc about the Beatles’ George Harrison. Scorsese was also originally attached to a Bob Marley documentary but was replaced by Jonathan Demme. Plus, as Peter Travers has pointed out, Scorsese knows a thing or two about soundtracking a film. The script will be written by Phil Alden Robinson, who also served as both screenwriter and director of Field of Dreams and Sneakers.
“My father had great admiration for the talent of the people he chose to work with, and the talented people who worked with my father had great admiration for him,” said Tina Sinatra in a statement. “It is personally pleasing to me that this paradigm continues with Marty Scorsese at the helm of the Sinatra film.” No casting decisions have been announced as yet, but given that Scorsese has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio on four consecutive films including the upcoming Shelter Island, it seems conceivable the Titanic star will be the frontrunner for the Sinatra role. No estimated release date has been announced for the film, as Scorsese currently has his hands full with the aforementioned Harrison doc, plus “in development” films like The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (also with DiCaprio, according to IMDB) and Silence.
