Trent Reznor dropped a little pre-Christmas present to fans on the Nine Inch Nails Website, promising that the new year will bring new music from his new studio-only project. “2010 has a number of things planned including new material from Nine Inch Nails and something else that isn’t Nine Inch Nails,” Reznor wrote. “I am in a state of rediscovery and reinvention that feels unfamiliar, unsure and exactly what I need.”
Reznor also logged into his sporadically used Twitter for the second time this month to write “Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass. Blown away,” along with a link to a collaborative concert video that the NIN team made with their fans. Another Version of the Truth: The Gift was filmed by the NIN crew during three Lights in the Sky concerts in 2008 with high-quality cameras. Then the massive amount of raw footage was distributed to the fans, who collaborated to edit it down into a cohesive live document. The finished product — available on DVD, iPod, YouTube and, coming soon, Blu-ray — is up for free download over on the This One is On Us Website.
NIN Wave Goodbye: photos from the band’s final concert.
After 2008 featured a pair of new NIN albums, The Slip and Ghosts I-IV, the only studio output that bore the Nine Inch Nails name this year were the two tracks that featured on the NINJA 2009 Tour Sampler EP that preceded the band’s tour with Jane’s Addiction. The Nine Inch Nails touring band was put to rest this year with the Wave Goodbye tour, but the newly married Reznor promised to continue NIN as a studio project.
As for that “something else that isn’t Nine Inch Nails” Reznor mentioned, as Rolling Stone previously reported, Gary Numan discussed the possibility of collaborating with Reznor after the pair performed together during NIN’s final concerts, so we’re betting that planned partnership takes shape in 2010.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor married his fiancée Mariqueen Maandig in a ceremony on Saturday, October 17th, E! News reports. Producer Danny Lohner first broke the news of the wedding, writing on his Twitter, “Goths the world over will mourn this day — off to a wedding.” Later in the day, Lohner posted a blurry photo of Reznor and Maandig slow-dancing as husband and wife. Trent over at Pink Is the New Blog was also at the reception, and posted photos of Mr. and Mrs. Reznor at the ceremony, including a couple shots of Reznor in his spiffy suit and silver tie and a bunch of candid shots from the reception itself.
According to E!, the wedding was photographed by Robert Evans, who handled Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s wedding, but no official confirmation has been made. Reznor has yet to post about his wedding on his official Website, and as Rolling Stone previously reported he deleted his Twitter this summer. The pair announced their engagement in May 2009. Congrats to the Reznors.

Nine Inch Nails’ Wave Goodbye tour came to a brief halt today: Trent Reznor got sick, forcing the band to cancel tonight’s concert at Los Angeles’ Henry Fonda Theatre, the official Nine Inch Nails Website posted this morning. The concert was to be Nine Inch Nails’ second of four shows in Los Angeles; the fourth show at the city’s Echoplex will mark the final NIN concert ever. No word yet whether the Henry Fonda performance will be rescheduled or canceled.
“We’re very sorry to announce that Trent is ill, and on his doctor’s orders we will not be able to perform tonight’s show at the Henry Fonda Theater. This is the only information we have at this time, we’re posting this early announcement as a convenience for those of you who had plans to attend,” reads the post on the NIN Website. “Reimbursement details will be posted as soon as we figure them out; likely within the next 24 hours. We wish this wasn’t necessary and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding.”
Despite battling an illness, Reznor and Nine Inch Nails performed last night as Los Angeles’ Palladium, and as they did when they came to New York’s Webster Hall last month, the band played their classic The Downward Spiral in its entirety. But there were more surprises in store for the Palladium crowd, Brooklyn Vegan reports: Gary Numan, whose music served as a major inspiration for Reznor, came out to perform two The Pleasure Principle tracks with NIN.
First, they performed “Metal,” a song that’s been frequently covered by Nine Inch Nails, then came a rendition of Numan’s most famous song, “Cars.” As Rolling Stone previously reported, Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy joined NIN onstage during the band’s last two concerts in New York City.
Barring further cancellations, Rolling Stone will be at Trent Reznor’s show at the Echoplex for what will be Nine Inch Nails’ final concert, so check back for the full report.

Nine Inch Nails played their last ever New York concert last night at Terminal 5, ending a brief four-show run in the Big Apple. At both of their Terminal 5 shows, Trent Reznor and his soon-to-be-unemployed band welcomed Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy to the stage to perform a handful of songs. The last shows also featured set lists packed with dozens of Nine Inch Nails’ best songs and favorite covers as Reznor waved goodbye to his East Coast die-hards.
Rather than ending his venue-spanning NYC residence with hits like “Hurt” or “Head Like a Hole,” Reznor, with Murphy onstage, capped off his stay with covers of Bauhaus’ classic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” and, finally, Pere Ubu’s “Final Solution.” The August 25th show also featured Murphy guesting on Bauhaus’ “Kick in the Eye” and NIN’s fan-favorite cover of Joy Division’s “Dead Souls.” At last night’s show, Murphy descended from T5’s belfry vampire-style, hanging upside as a chain lowered him to the stage, all while singing “Reptile” (Brooklyn Vegan has video of Murphy’s Dracula feat, which he memorably pulled off at Coachella several years ago, too).
As Reznor has mentioned several times in the weeks since announcing the retirement of the live Nine Inch Nails, he reiterated to the T5 crowd that NIN will continue to make music, but that his concert days were over. As Rock Daily previously reported, Reznor’s NYC stand also featured a performance of the entire The Downward Spiral at Webster Hall.
Next up on Nine Inch Nails’ Wave Goodbye tour is a pair of concerts at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom this Friday and Saturday before Reznor performs Sunday, August 30th at Toronto’s Virgin Festival. Reznor will officially put his live performance days to rest with a four-day, four-venue stand in Los Angeles. Rock Daily will be at the final (ever?) Nine Inch Nails concert on September 6th at Los Angeles’ Echoplex, so check back for our full report.

With Rage Against the Machine back on ice for the time being, it was only a matter of time before Tom Morello would have to plug back in and, well, rage a little. As the Nightwatchman, he gets to dabble in Woody Guthrie-inspired acoustic tunes, but the siren song of electric guitars and big riffs must be too strong to avoid.
As a warm-up for their opening slot on the impending Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails tour — which kicks off Friday in Florida (Rolling Stone will have a full report) — Morello’s new band, Street Sweeper Social Club, played a surprise gig opening for the Roots last night at New York’s Highline Ballroom, engaging a sold-out crowd that was there more to dance than to mosh. Morello and crew — featuring frontman Boots Riley of Oakland hip-hop act the Coup — took the stage in matching black coats with red trim and shades and kicked into the staccato, guitar-heavy “Fight! Smash! Win!,” complete with some shredding from Morello without his trademark effects array.
But he still had plenty of tricks up his sleeve, including a guitar solo on “Somewhere in the World It’s Midnight” that consisted of him rapid-fire strumming his guitar’s G string while de-tuning it to change notes instead of by fretting. He also pulled out the technique that might be as synonymous with his name as finger-tapping is with Eddie Van Halen, going into a carefully-orchestrated toggle-switch frenzy to open “100 Little Curses.” The biggest gasp of recognition came when the band hit the chorus on its cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” substituting massive power chords and crashing drums instead of the original track’s gunshots, making the song as hard-edged as its lyrics.
Street Sweeper Social Club might finally answer the question, “What if you actually had a really good rapper in a hard rock band?” instead of merely a capable one, as Riley’s smooth delivery keeps things from being meatheaded, but he can still use it to build the energy in the room when he needs to; multiple songs ended with vocal crescendos not dissimilar from Rage’s “Killing in the Name” before blowing up into power-riffing fury. In fact, the overall Rage-ness of some of the tunes is maybe enough to make one wonder if these songs were originally bound for the RATM reunion album that was rumored last year and never emerged, but Riley is no Zack de la Rocha imitator, and the band is its own foot-stomping, teeth-gnashing beast.
Set list:
“Fight! Smash! Win!”
“Somewhere in the World It’s Midnight”
“Paper Planes”
“100 Little Curses”
“Promenade”
“The Squeeze”
“Nobody Moves (Til We Say Go)”

Trent Reznor’s goals for this summer’s Nine Inch Nails tour — his first major trek since dropping one of the best albums of his career for free in The Slip — are modest. “I want you to leave feeling like your head exploded,” Reznor told Rolling Stone’s Gavin Edwards during rehearsals. With two months to go before Lollapalooza descends on Chicago’s Grant Park, the festival has announced the three-day schedule for August 1-3. Radiohead will headline Friday, or Day 1, of the fest, but after that, decision-making about what stage to go and when becomes difficult, as many top caliber bands perform in the same time slots. Among the scheduling predicaments you might face: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks vs. the Raconteurs on Day 1 and the Royal Rumble scheduled for 6:15pm on Day 3 between Gnarls Barkley, Girl Talk and Love & Rockets. But the most difficult decision you’ll have to make is which Day 2 and 3 headliners to see, as Day 2 has Wilco facing off against Rage Against the Machine and Day 3 schedules an 8:30pm head to head between Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West. While that sucks, thankfully the Lollapalooza website is allowing you to create a custom schedule to help you navigate through the seven corporate-sponsored stages. Click here to check out the full schedule.

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.
Neil Diamond, “Pretty Amazing Grace” [Official]
Rick Rubin and Neil Diamond return, with a record that sounds very polite. We like this, and we appreciate the effort, but we kinda wish “serious” didn’t always mean misplacing the ostentatiousness.
Elvis Costello, “Stella Hurts” [Stereo Jealousy]
Elvis Costello’s latest, Momofuku, has been out on vinyl for weeks, but today is the first day you can purchase it in any digital format. Don’t try to sample any MP3s online besides this one, though, because that endeavor will just turn into an endless hellish circle of dead links, outdated MySpace pages and mounting exasperation. Trust us.
No Age, “Sleeper Hold” [MySpace]
We’ve got your big, loud, sloppy rock & roll right here. Barely practiced, clattering and cantankerous, No Age restore a bit of recklessness to a rock scene whose premeditation has become crazy-making.
Nine Inch Nails, The Slip [Full Album]
Maybe you’ve heard something about this: Trent Reznor is giving away the new Nine Inch Nails album, on his site, for free. Or, at least, free until Trent shows up in your bedroom late one night, illuminated only by a flash of lightning, holding a briefcase and ominously sneering, “Ahhh, yesss, but perhapss there is something you can do for meeee…”
Young Jeezy feat. Kanye West, “Put On” [Advance Track]
You know what we’d like more than anything else? For someone to rig up a Delorean, go back in time, and destroy the vocoder. Guys, please, listen: the vocoder? It doesn’t sound cool. Analogy: 20 years ago they made a He-Man playset and it came with a microphone that was supposed to make you sound like Skeletor. You know what it made you sound like? A friendless dork. Vocoder? Same thing. Let it go.

A mere two months after surprising fans with the web-released Ghosts I-IV and two weeks after surprising radio stations with new single “Discipline,” Trent Reznor and his prolific Nine Inch Nails announced this morning that their hinted-at new album The Slip was available as a free and immediate download. According to Reznor, the album is being given away for free as a “thank you to our fans for your continued support.” The album features ten tracks and is once again licensed by Creative Commons, allowing fans to remix it, repost it and do what they wish with it. Reznor also promises CD and vinyl copies in July.
