Kelly Clarkson is joining this summer’s revamped Lilith Fair, according to an announcement yesterday. She’ll be performing with people like Sarah McLachlan, who founded the festival, Ke$ha, Colbie Caillat, Tegan and Sara, Corinne Bailey Rae, Erykah Badu, Emmylou Harris, Metric, Jill Scott, La Roux, Loretta Lynn, The Bangles, The Go-Go’s, a couple of Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, and Suzanne Vega. Looks like Lilith is aiming for a cross-section of genres, and not as much of the folky, earthy vibe of the past. The lady-centric tour, designed to celebrate women in music, has been defunct since 1999. So…who’s buying our ticket? Because there’s no way we’re missing this concert. [MTV]

Multiplatinum-selling recording artist Kelly Clarkson — winner of the first season of American Idol — hit her blog in a fury on Thursday, after the head of Taylor Swift’s record label made a biting reference to the TV talent show that catapulted her to stardom in his attempt to defend the country star’s widely-panned Grammys duet with Stevie Nicks.

On Thursday, Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine Records, defended Swift’s Grammys performance by referencing the reality singing competition that introduced the world to Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Carrie Underwood.
“She is the voice of this generation. She speaks directly to (her fans), and they speak directly back to her,” Borchetta told The Tennessean. “This is not ‘American Idol.’ This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It’s not about that technically perfect performance.”
Bloggers and media outlets, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, pounced on Swift’s off-key performance, which Borchetta blames on technical issues.
But it was Borchetta’s remark about Idol — not Taylor’s offensive screeching — that sent Kelly clicking away at her keyboard in a blogged response, she writes:
“I understand defending your artist obviously because I have done the same in the past for artists I like, including Taylor, so you might see why its upsetting to read you attacking American Idol for producing simply vocalists that hit ‘the high notes….Thank you for that ‘Captain Obvious’ sense of humor because you know what, we not only hit the high notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the ‘right’ notes as well.”
The powerhouse rattled on with: “Every artist has a bad performance or two and that is understandable, but throwing blame will not make the situation at hand any better. I have been criticized left and right for having shaky performances before (and they were shaky) and what my manager or label executives say to me and the public is ‘I’ll kick butt next time’ or ‘every performance isn’t going to be perfect,’” Kelly wrote. “I bring this up because you should take a lesson from these people and instead of lashing out at other artists (that in your ‘humble’ opinion lack true artistry), you should simply take a breath and realize that sometimes things won’t go according to plan or work out and that’s okay.”
The “Since U Been Gone” hitmaker completed her blog by signing: “Sincerely, One of those contestants from American Idol who only made it because of her high notes.”

Like the millions of people who have made Robert Pattinson and Stephenie Meyer superstars, Kelly Clarkson is a big fan of the Twilight series. In fact, Clarkson classified herself as a “nerd Twilight fan” in a recent interview with MYX in which she confirms she and her backup singers penned a song about New Moon before the soundtrack to the film was finalized. “Empty As I Am,” written from the perspective of the series’ heroine Bella, didn’t end up on the film’s soundtrack, but but you can listen to a raw version of the track on Idolator. “It’s a sweet song, but it’s pretty sad,” Clarkson says, noting, “but it’s a sad book. [The books are] very relatable — everyone goes through those emotions.”
While the song might be closer thematically and lyrically to anything that actually wound up on the New Moon soundtrack, “Empty As I Am” sounds quite different from the tracks by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, the Killers, Grizzly Bear and Death Cab for Cutie that ended up on the disc. “It’s a really sad book,” Clarkson says of New Moon and the inspiration behind the song. “It’s the one where she gets left behind, a Romeo and Juliet tragic kind of thing.”
Luckily for Clarkson, she’ll have two — and potentially three, if they slice Breaking Dawn into two films — more chances to appear on a Twilight Saga soundtrack. In case she needed any more inspiration, New Moon werewolf Taylor Lautner was recently on the cover of Rolling Stone:

Kelly Clarkson did a recent interview where she talked about touring and working on the release of her fifth studio album.
During the interview, Kelly said that she has already started working on her new album, which is set for release in 2010. She said, “We’re already working on it. The songs are really different. The next record is going to be really different.”
She goes on to reveal that she’s not writing all of the songs on the new record, because she’s been busy touring. She said, “If I end up liking stuff that I’ve done then I’ll include it, but if I like other stuff better I’ll use that. Sometimes you’re just more inspired I guess, and sometimes if you have records that come out really close together it might be more other peoples songs. Because there’s not enough time to write and sing and perform and do everything.”

Last night’s VMAs ceremony featured Madonna and Janet Jackson’s tributes to the King of Pop, the This Is It trailer and Lady Gaga’s strangest costumes yet, but as soon as the lights dimmed at Radio City Music Hall, all everyone wanted to talk about was Kanye West’s outburst during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. Dozens of celebrities flocked to their Twitters and blogs in support of Swift, and three-time VMA winner Kelly Clarkson sat down to write a scathing open letter to the rapper.
Relive VMAs’ ’09’s memorable moments, in photos.
“I’ve seen you do some pretty shitty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, asshole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you. I like everyone. I even like my asshole ex that cheated on me over you… which is pretty odd since I don’t even personally know you,” Clarkson wrote on her IAmKelly blog. “The best part of this evening is that you weren’t even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??” Clarkson was nominated in the Best Female Video category last night, but added that she was “excited” when Swift was named the winner.
Pink, who also lost in the Best Female Video category, reportedly had to be restrained by security from approaching West after his rant. Unable to lash out in person, Pink instead turned to her Twitter to attack Kanye, MTV reports. “Kanye West is the biggest piece of shit on earth. Quote me,” Pink wrote. “My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl and deserved her moment.”
American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert wrote on his Twitter, “Kanye needs to chill. He freaks out every year. It ain’t that deep man,” while Danny Gokey simply used Kanye’s words against him, writing “How could you be so heartless?” Katy Perry was less subtle in her tweet, posting “Fuck U Kanye. It’s like u stepped on a kitten.” Kings of Leon’s Nathan Followill said, “We lost damnit. Maybe next year. At least we got to see the worst haircut since 1984 try to steal the spotlight from lovely Taylor Swift.” For more of the Kanye bashfest, check out ONTD’s rundown of celeb tweets.
Despite the backlash, Kanye won’t be able to hide for long — he’s scheduled to appear with Jay-Z and Rihanna for a performance of “Run This Town” on tonight’s premiere episode of The Jay Leno Show. Barring Kanye canceling on Leno — or Leno canceling on Kanye — you can probably expect West to steal the microphone from Leno’s desk and issue another apology to Swift tonight on air.

Kelly Clarkson may be comfortable with her weight, but Self magazine wanted her to drop a few pounds, apparently. A slimmed-down photo of Clarkson on the women’s magazine’s cover this month is causing waves online.
Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of the women’s health magazine, is speaking out in defense of “retouching” the 27-year-old simply make her “look her personal best.”
“Yes. Of course we do retouching,” Danziger writes about the pic in a post on Self.com. “Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best.”
Calling Clarkson “the picture of confidence,” Danzinger writes, “I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand.”
Did Self artificially slim down Kelly Clarkson?
But many have expressed disappointment and outrage over the digitally slim Kelly. And in the article itself, Clarkson defends her fuller figure.
“When people talk about my weight, I’m like, ‘You seem to have a problem with it; I don’t. I’m fine!,’” the original American Idol winner says.
“I’m never trying to lose weight – or gain it,” she added. “I’m just being!”
This is not the first photo flap the singer has been involved with in the last year.
In January, Kelly Clarkson wrote on her blog that “they Photoshopped the crap out of me!” on her All I Ever Wanted album cover image.
What do you think of the retouching? Too far, or standard?
