Robert Pattinson is set to swing into action to replace Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4, according to a report out of the UK. But the Twilight hunk will have some stiff competition from fellow young stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Zac Efron.
Moviegoers were devastated when it was announced that former Spidey star Tobey Maguire, 34, would be hanging up his cape. Last week, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios said they will delay the fourth film in the hit superhero franchise by one year and return in 2012 with a new story, new director, and cast. A new prequel will see Peter Parker back in high school.
The Twilight hunk is reportedly the top choice of Columbia executives to star in the film, Britain’s The Mirror said Sunday.
A source tells the tab: “The buzz in Hollywood is all about R-Patz as the hot, young thing being lined up to fill Tobey Maguire’s shoes. It would be a hard act to follow as fans were traumatised at the news Tobey was going. His mild-mannered portrayal as Peter Parker and the transformation to Spider-Man kept millions of fans in the cinemas for the box-office smash. He also had great chemistry with Kirsten Dunst, who plays love interest Mary Jane.”
Does Pattz really stand a chance with Efron and Gyllenhaal also in the running? “I don’t know what the chances are to be honest. I assume they’re pretty slim. It’s a long-shot but if it came down to it, it’d be a dream come true. What young actor wouldn’t?”

Stalker Alert: Their relationship may be over, but lovesick actor Jake Gyllenhaal hasn’t given up on the idea of reconciling with the lovely Reese Witherspoon. In fact, he’s working tirelessly to win the actress back. The Oscar-winning stunner — who ended her two year relationship with Jake after she realized she wasn’t ready to take a second trip down the aisle – has been bombarded with pleas from her heartbroken ex in the weeks since the former couple’s split. For Christmas, Jake gifted Reese with $85,000 worth of vintage dinnerware imported from France and has been sending her daily emails, flowers, and love poems.
“Jake’s heartbroken over losing Reese. He’s taking the break-up hard and wants Reese back,” a friend reveals in the Jan. 11 issue of In Touch Weekly. “Jake is a romantic…..He isn’t giving up without a fight.”
Reese was previously married to actor Ryan Phillippe, while Jake enjoyed a six year romance with actress Kirsten Dunst.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are no longer together.
We know you’re sad. Please, hold a vigil tonight in your area.
The two end things two weeks ago, even as they insisted they hadn’t. “They needed time to figure it out and they were on different coasts,” a source says.
“When they were finally together, they talked things out and decided they’re not going to be together anymore. There are no other people involved.”
“The relationship just ended, as is often the case. It just fizzled out. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese’s kids.”
FAREWELL, GYLLENSPOON: Jake and Reese had a good run.
The new never talked about their romance. Earlier this month, Gyllenhaal made headline news when he used the g-word while promoting Brothers.
“I’ve learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things,” the actor said.
“Obviously I exist in my girlfriend’s world and my sister’s world in a different way, but it’s opened my heart and I want to be grown up as a result of it.”
For now, though, it’s a return to bachelorhood for ol’ Jake.

Contrary to reports that surfaced elsewhere this weekend, Sunday, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have not broken up. Phew! We knew it wasn’t true!
Her rep said late yesterday: “It’s not true. They have not split.”
The actress met Gyllenhaal while filming 2007’s Rendition, and the pair stepped out together shortly thereafter, confirming their relationship in summer 2008.
In the April 2009 issue of Elle, the Oscar-winning mother of two and ex-wife of Ryan Phillippe gushed about Jake: “He’s fabulous. He really is a fantastic guy.”
Couples come and go, but Gyllenspoon remains intact.
Reese divorced Ryan in 2007 after eight years together; they have two children: Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6. Gyllenhaal’s previous girlfriend was Kirsten Dunst.
Witherspoon told Parade magazine last year, “Things change … But your ability to love, that remains intact. Oh, I have a lot of hope for love! I do!”
Glad to hear that hope springs eternal. Or at least right now. Just don’t read anything about David and Pamela Bach-Hasselhoff, guys. Just don’t.

“Source Code” is collecting players and producers, and it’s looking like a fine team so far.
Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the sci-fi thriller about a soldier who wakes up in the body of a commuter and must solve the mystery of a train explosion.
Philippe Rousselet and Mark Gordon are set to produce, but I’m most excited about the director – Duncan Jones who directed this year’s sleeper sci-fi hit, “Moon.”
If you haven’t seen that movie yet, check it out. It’s a real twisty-turny space odyssey, with similarities to “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Oh, by the way, Jones is David Bowie’s son.
And Jake Gyllenhaal … well, he can do no wrong as far as the film projects he’s choosing these days.
