However, the movie took a difference approach in explaining the unsolved mystery. They movie was based on a theory that these disappearances were actually alien abductions. The theory claims that sleep-deprived patients who went under hypnosis were vulnerable to alien abduction. In fact, the movie presents audio and video tape of such sessions as archival footage, and is framed to look like an adaptation of a true story.
